We were very happy to host photographer Dave Brosha in Cochrane this past weekend.  Dave flew down from Yellowknife, NWT to provide us with an oopoomoo Talk, “Mastering Environmental Light” on Saturday.  We all learned so much!  As a shooter who rarely uses flash, what I found the most useful piece of advice from Dave was direction on where to start with a portrait shoot.  All too often we get so carried away with setting up our gear that we forget to take into account our environment.  Do we want to use some of the ambient light or none at all?  Do we even need flash?  Dave helped steer us around the pitfalls of getting lost in our lights or losing connection with our models.  The most entertaining part of the show was the live demo during which Darwin was called upon to assist Dave as he photographed our model, Talyn Stone, in front of our audience.  Although reluctant at first, Darwin seemed to enjoy his new role as co-model and got into the spirit of things.

Always quick to see great opportunities, Dave even managed to line up a shoot with Talyn on Sunday after the talk.  So, a few photographers who were hanging out at our house got to work with a talented model and benefit from more of Dave’s help and advice on working with environmental light.  It was cold and windy but Talyn was a trooper!  We took some footage of the photo outing so watch for a little video in the next few days.  Thanks, Dave, for coming all the way to Cochrane and sharing your expertise with us!  Here are a couple more of Dave’s images from the demo with Talyn.
